What are the press saying about Mariah Carey’s Infinity?

Posted on April 27, 2015April 27, 2015 by Mariah Connection News Team

USA Today writes: Song of the Week: Mariah Carey

Infinity’s gloriously over-the-top orchestral synths are exceeded only by the song’s even more over-the-top non sequitur couplets — “Name hold weight like kilos/Boy, you actin’ so corny, like Fritos.” Throw in a few of Carey’s trademark vocal runs on the last vowel of the title, and Infinity becomes a kiss off (inspired by her travails with Nick Cannon, perhaps?) that sounds more like a come-on.

Billboard writes: For Mariah Carey, revenge is a dish best served in a 90’s-tinged heartbreak anthem.

Carey premiered her new song “Infinity” and its lyric video on April 26. The throwback-flavored track is a soaring break-up track, complete with sassy lines that shut down the guy she’s singing about. They are the kind of lyrics that might have speculate that the track is about her recent split from Nick Cannon. Or perhaps it’s just Carey returning to form as the queen of post-heartbreak empowerment.

“Close the door/ Lose the key/ Leave my heart on the mat for me,” she declares on the chorus. “I was your eternally/ There’s an end to infinity.”

But the chorus is almost sweet compared to some of lines she slings at other points on the track, including “Name hold weight like kilos/ Boy you actin’ so corny like Fritos/ Wouldn’t have none of that without me, though/ Ain’t none of my business, it’s tea though/ Outta ammo, gotta reload/ If life was a game you’re a free throw/ It’s nothing that you don’t already know.”

E! Online writes: Is old school Mariah Carey back?! By the sound of her new single, “Infinity,” it seems so! Although the lyrics are definitely loaded, there are some cheesy lines that make you want to sing along with the volume on full blast. Lines such as “name hold weight like kilos / boy you actin so corny like fritos,” almost make you forget what the song alludes to and instead makes you want to blast it like it’s “Fantasy” or “Emotions.”

Showbiz 411 writes: I told you last week that Mariah Carey’s new song “Infinity” would be a hit. Great music and clever lyrics drive this single. Mariah tells someone– is it Nick Cannon?– to close the door, lose the key, leave my heart on the mat for me…” She also reminds him that “you just lost the best you ever had” and “everything you own boy you still owe…” Ouch!

SPIN Magazine writes: “Infinity,” a sweeping ballad that starts with an orchestral intro of Just Blaze-sized bombast and ends with a trademark Mariah whistle-register high note. It’s a torch song that’s stadium-sized in both sound and emotion, the likes of which no one pulls off quite like the Elusive Chanteuse.

Vanity Fair writes: It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Mariah Carey’s latest song –– the only new track on her greatest-hits album Mariah Carey #1 To Infinity –– should be dipped in nostalgia. But I’m not sure any of us were prepared for the nostalgia trip to go this far down memory lane. The song, “Infinity,” dropped on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube tonight and between the corny (like Fritos) lyrics and the breathy Carey vocal runs, we’re right back in the plaid shirt-wearing, tire swing-frolicking days of yore. The new song marks a reunion between Carey and Epic CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid who helped put together best-selling album The Emancipation of Mimi.

Idolator writes: It’s a smooth mid-tempo ballad that showcases the pop icon’s full register and knack for writing hilarious one-liners (“Boy you so corny like Fritos” and “If life was a game you’re a free throw” are my favorites).

It’s extremely catchy and quintessentially Mariah.

New York Magazine – Vulture Team write: It’s a throwback in the best way: empowering lyrics, soaring vocals, and a chorus with multisyllabic words (and French!) that you can mangle at karaoke.

MTV News writes: Mariah Carey’s new song, “Infinity,” is a swelling orchestral R&B jam that manages to work in a Fritos reference. If that doesn’t make you interested, listen to the lyrics, which are undoubtedly about getting over a breakup. The chorus will break your heart as she professes that everything has an end — even infinity.

Digital Spy writes: ‘Infinity’ sees the star sassily beg the question: “Why you mad? Talking ’bout you’re mad/ Could it be that you just lost the best you’ve ever had?”

What’s more, Carey even turns her tongue to the French language while hitting those famous high notes.

Entertainment Weekly writes: Mariah Carey’s new single ‘Infinity’ is the ’90s throwback we’ve been waiting for.

Mariah Carey’s Infinity is available to stream at Spotify & VEVO. You can also purchase the track from iTunes.
