Usually joined at the hip in terms of their chart progress this time of year, there’s something of a divergence this time around between the fortunes of The Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl) and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You. All I Want For Christmas Is You moved 52-17 last week, pulling just ahead of Fairtytale Of New York, which advanced 48-18 – but the latter track now sprints to number 11 (27,364 sales), while the latter splutters a little and moves only to number 16 (23,501 sales). Wham!’s Last Christmas also cooled, moving only 39-36 (13,929 sales). I think we have to lay the blame at the feet of Google Play – the web monster was selling Fairytale Of New York for 19p all last week but was giving away both All I Want For Christmas Is You and Wham!s Last Christmas. Instead of paying Amazon 79p or iTunes 99p, a lot of people naturally preferred to pick up All I Want For Christmas Is You and Last Christmas for free – but since free tracks play no part in OCC calculations, it was to their detriment as far as chart placings were concerned.
