Times Magazine: “Thirsty,†which premiered today, is almost like an attempt to fix that, to get the hip-hop-influenced track right. Producer Hit-Boy (a couple of his eponymous hits: Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Paris,†Beyoncé’s “XO†and “Flawlessâ€) gives Carey one of his signature beats: a minimalist synth hook that breaks into martial strings or imperial sangfroid when the mood calls for it. And this time Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan’s the one who gets dominated by Carey’s larger-than-life presence; he warbles Future-ish backing vocals on the hook while Carey dismisses the titular “thirsty†braggart.
The anti-scrub track is one of Mariah’s best looks – sometimes she even names names, as with Eminem on “Obsessed†– and as always, Carey makes it seem and sound utterly effortless.
PopDust: Mariah Carey‘s newest single release “Thirsty†is just a sweet, sweet fantasy, baby. Despite her previous entries [“Your Mine” (Eternal)” among them] failing to generate enough album buzz, the Queen Of Pop goes for one of the most radio-friendly cuts in her recent catalog. Featuring only one verse by Atlanta rapper Homie Quan, the bumpin’ track pours up some sultry richness and sensuality. It first premiered on Power 105.1 on Tuesday (May 13).
Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse is expected to drop May 27, and this perfectly sunbaked club anthem should do nicely to move records. Following the new single’s release, the diva shared the mermaid-like cover art, blazoned with shades of pink across a beautiful sunset.
XXL Magazine: Mariah Carey and Rich Homie Quan? That’s quite the combination.
Recently, Mariah announced her 14th studio album, I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, to release on May 27. After her first single “You’re Mine (Eternal)†didn’t stick with fans, she’s back with a new club banger called “Thristy†featuring 2014 XXL Freshman Rich Homie Quan. With Hit-Boy on the production, you are guaranteed to hear this one turn up the night.
Idolator: Carey’s new song “Thirsty,†as premiered on Power 105.1 on May 13, is the sort of single that her label likely wanted. The pop diva plays it cool in a club-friendly R&B setting, her nonchalant verses skittering over a synth melody that sounds like the prelude to Jay Z and Kanye West‘s “Paris.†Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan also drops in for a surprise verse, as he isn’t listed in the album’s tracklist.
“Thirsty†sounds tailor-made for radio airplay, right now — but is it the sort of boost that Me. I Am Mariah needs?
